A web hosting service is a type of hosting that allows individuals and organizations to own domain and provide their own website, have their own email address, a forwarding service, a parked page and etc. The web hosting companies normally provide all these services including dedicated service which allows the customer to have their own server to manage.

Free Hosting
Some service providers offer free web hosting. These are mostly suited for small sites which are mostly static and low traffic and usually the user would have to either purchase their own domain or use an existing one provided by hosting company. The hosting company may also decide to include their own advertisement on user’s web pages. You should probably not expect any proper technical support in case of issues. Shared (Virtual) Hosting
The most common type of hosting is shared hosting. This service group together many different websites onto one server sharing cpu, memory, storage and bandwidth. The number of websites could be at minimum 100 or perhaps even a thousand depending on how capable the server is. Shared hosting is cheap, and depending on the company it can good customer and technical service. It is meant for small businesses with average traffic.
Dedicated Hosting
The customer owns their own dedicated server and has the option to manage it themselves. This is probably the most expensive type of hosting and it is generally meant for large businesses with high traffic.
Collocated Hosting
This type of hosting allows you to place your own servers at the location of a service provider. This gives the flexibility to build you your own server farm including firewall, load balancers. This is for a high-bandwidth, high uptime, high security and Software installs are unlimited and is not restricted. This is very expensive and it requires your own team to administer the equipment.
CDN
A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a system of computers containing copies of data, placed at various points in a network so as to maximize bandwidth for access to the data from clients throughout the network. A client accesses a copy of the data near to the client, as opposed to all clients accessing the same central server, thereby causing a bottleneck near that server.
Content types include web objects, downloadable objects (media files, software, documents), applications, real time media streams, and other components of internet delivery (DNS, routes, and database queries).
Reseller Hosting
Reselling web hosting services means that you can take out a contract with a web hosting provider and then sell their services on under your own brand. Web hosting companies do this because they are able to sell more of their dedicated hosting space this way. The site company wildwestdomains.com is an example.
Image hosting
Allows hosting of only a few different formate of images. This type of hosting is free and a typical example is imageshack or flickr.
Virtual Private Server
Similar to dedicated hosting but it houses several virtual environments from one physical server. It behaves exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. This is often a much more affordable solution than a dedicated server, normally offering all the same benefits, such as root access.
Clustered hosting
Definition from wikipedia: Designed to eliminate the problems inherent with typical shared hosting infrastructures. This technology provides customers with a “clustered” handling of security, load balancing, and necessary website resources.
Blog hosting
As the name implies, this type of hosting hosts blog applications. A good example is blogspot.com or wordpress.org
Video hosting
You’re probably already familiar with this hosting and youtube.com servers a primary example of this type of hosting.
DNS hosting
This type of hosting simply manages your domain name records.
E-mail hosting
This is primarily for email. Google and Yahoo provide such services for free as well as paid service that come with numerous features. Google also offers free web hosting services, go to googlepages.com to sign up and host your own website for FREE.
There are also other types of hosting such as Game hosting where you can host online games. Remote back up where you keep your files hosted outside your own servers.
