Speed Testers

If you’re a high speed user, you’ve probably wondered how much bandwidth your ISP has been allocating to you. There are various websites and tools that provide an estimate of what your connection is capable of on down and up speeds. Here is a list of a few that you can use to educate yourself:

  • SPEEDTEST.NET – a free broadband speed test with servers located all over the world. Compare your results with others and easily share them. A nice visual of the world map.
  • SPEAKEASY.NET – Test your internet connection speed from one of many locations nationwide.
  • DSLREPORTS.COM – Several different methods to test speed such as via flash plugin, java, mobile speed test including from your iPhone. Obviously without 3G, the speed will suck but at least you’ll know how much.
  • BANDWITHPLACE.COM – Another speed tester, however I wasn’t too impressed with their method.
  • CNET Bandwidth Meter Speed Test – Probably one of the best ones out there. The result page includes a nice comparison chart of other connection speeds lower and higher than yours.
  • AUDITMYPC.COM – Internet Speed Test for Broadband, Cable, Satellite and DSL Modems that helps determine your true bandwidth. A nice looking graphical chart for download and upload speeds.
  • INTERNETFROG.COM – Another one of my favorites. Uses a visual chart comparing with other connection types.
  • PCPITSTOP.COM – This is the place to start to diagnose and hopefully fix connection problems for your home or office system. Measure your download speed, upload speed. Measure by ping times and traceroute. It also provides other utilities you can download to test your speed.

These tools can be used to perform benchmark tests against your neighbors connection speed. If you suspect that your connection is slow as crap and your ISP keep on insisting that nothing is wrong, then you can easily print out a couple of result pages using your local library’s connection or even your neighbor’s (if they allow you) to convince them of your situation.
